In Valor There is Hope

What is one of the most common dangers of policing an officer will ever face?

Answer: Having to confront a peer who is slipping professionally or personally and who might be endangering themselves or others.

What takes more courage to confront than any other single thing in law enforcement?

Answer: Having to acknowledge that you are having problems dealing with stress and that you might need some help.

What is the one thing that we have pledged above all to our brothers and sisters in law enforcement?

Answer: We have pledged that we are ALL one big family and that “No one gets left behind.”

The answer to all three of these questions is the same:

“Taking Care of Our Own”

Specifically:

1) Confronting a peer who is losing control of their life or their career and working to get them some help;

2) Having the strength to cross the “Thin Blue Line” and rescue a co-worker who is battling alcoholism, depression, drug addiction, or suicidal thoughts; and finally

3) “Never Leaving Anyone Behind” because if we don’t take care of our own, who will?

Unfortunately many times the pledge to “Take Care of Our Own” is a hollow one if we don’t have the courage to confront the people we should care about, before things get way out of control.

 At the
Law Enforcement Survival Institute
we have coined the term
“True Blue Valor™”

The concept of True Blue Valor™ is where one law enforcement officer has to muster the courage to confront a peer who is slipping both professionally and personally and endangering themselves, their peers and the public.  As part of our Law Enforcement Survival Institute training, we recommend that you consider the concept of True Blue Valor™.  Most importantly, when you are talking about the team concept in law enforcement and planning for whose responsibility it is to help a brother or sister officer in need, your discussion should include this concept.  It takes a system of organizational support and professional leadership to establish and foster the concept of True Blue Valor™.

What is in the True Blue Valor™ Course?TBV3DBookCover

The True Blue Valor™ Course is designed to create a positive law enforcement agency culture that actually walks its talk and takes care of its people so that truly “No one is left behind.”

The True Blue Valor™ Course suggests that all law enforcement professionals should have the courage to confront a peer who is slipping professionally and personally and endangering themselves, their peers and the public.  To do this it takes a system of organizational support and professional leadership to build a culture of True Blue Valor™.  This course teaches your agency how to build a system to unify the agency’s peer, family, EAP, psychological services and chaplain support programs and provides the materials needed to implement this system.

The True Blue Valor™ Course includes a twelve part, facilitated roll call training program with each session building upon the last one.  The program can be taught in 12 days or 12 weeks or 12 months based upon the instructors’ objectives.
